Location: San Francisco, CA
Description: Commercial Building
The 66,000 square foot building at 730 Polk Street in San Francisco was originally built and used as an automobile garage.
C.M. Peletz Co. undertook a massive seismic upgrade in order to have the building used as the Sierra Club headquarters including offices, meeting areas and work areas.
Seismic work included “X” bracing and steel “bents” placed within the existing structure without damage to the period masonry exterior walls and openings. An entirely new roof, including framing and diaphragm tied into the exterior walls.
The existing original roof frieze and other exterior details were preserved. An entirely new HVAC, automatic fire sprinkler, electrical and plumbing systems were installed. Existing windows were refurbished and exterior awnings added. Many interior public and private spaces were newly built to accommodate Sierra Club requirements. A “secure room” , a library and an elegant entry foyer were all constructed and specially finished.
